Oral And Maxillofacial Radiology

Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology is the main branch of dentistry in which the diagnosis and treatment of diseases in the mouth, teeth and jaw region are determined clinically and radiologically. The aim of the study is to determine the radiography taken from the mouth, teeth and jaw area and the pathology and anomalies if there are any. In the light of this information, an individual-specific treatment plan is prepared and patients are directed to the clinics where these treatments are performed.

Dental radiographs, namely dental films, are the most important diagnostic tools for the diagnosis of intraoral diseases, especially those related to hard tissue such as teeth and jawbone. The most commonly used types of dental films are periapical (small films showing 2 or 3 teeth) and panoramic films (large films showing all upper and lower teeth and jaw bones) Digital radiography devices, which is a computer aided technique, allow us to perform detailed evaluation by enabling the use of very low radiation dose to make color and light play on the film image. In addition, MR and CT are required for the diagnosis of joint diseases especially in implant applications.

Oral Diagnosis is not always limited to dentistry. Some of the symptoms in the mouth can be a sign of the systemic general manifestation of serious diseases. For example; Gingival bleeding can be a symptom of a tooth-related syndrome, as well as a sign of serious diseases such as leukemia.Oral cancers are seen in up to 5% of general cancer rates, and an oral diagnosis is required for early diagnosis.
