Periodontology

Periodontology is the discipline of dentistry that examines the clinical and microscopic structure of the hard and soft tissues around the teethes, identifies the diseases that affect these tissues, administers treatments and keeps the teeth’s health.

Although bacterial plaque is the main reason of periodontal diseases, also smoking, systemic diseases, medications, stress and nutrition can affect gingival health. In addition, the dental treatment must be done carefully in order not to occur any complications by diseases or situations that affects the general body system.

• Bleeding gums when brushing teeth,
• Red, swollen and sensitive gums,
• Gums that can be separated easily from the teeth,
• Inflammatory discharge between teeth and gums,
• Teeth that loose or move away from each other,
• Changes in the connections between the upper and lower teeth during biting,
• Partial prosthesis compliance change, distortion,
• Constant bad breath

However, periodontal disease can reach to advanced stages without any symptoms. Therefore, it is extremely important to go to the dentist at regular intervals.

How to treat gi̇ngi̇val di̇seases

Awareness of oral and dental hygiene need to be provided,

• Cleaning of teeth and food plaque formation, (Scaling)
• Deep cleaning of gum pockets, (Curettage)
• Cleaning, curettage with the physician’s recommended medications,

In advanced diseases, periodontal surgical procedures (gum operations) are applied to prevent gingival recession and bone loss and to prevent recurrence. Surgical and mechanical treatments can be performed with classical or laser applications. Laser applications have been used in gingival diseases in recent years.

The most important task in preventing periodontal disease fall to the person himself. For the maintenance of oral and dental health, bacterial dental plaques should be removed by daily oral care procedures (tooth brushing and using dental floss). It is equally important to visit the dentist at regular intervals. Although daily oral care procedures minimizing tartar formation, they are not completely sufficient. A dentist’s evaluation of areas that are not accessible by toothbrush, dental floss or other cleaning means is important for the removal of the current dental plaque and / or tartar.

The bad smell on the breath may be due to a serious systemic disease that requires diagnosis and treatment, even if it is due to an oral disease such as poor oral hygiene or an advanced gingival disease, rooting teeth, half-buried twenty-year-old teeth. However, it is usually oral.

How to treat; In addition to oral hygiene training, oral hygiene and especially for the treatment of periodontal diseases should be done by professional physicians in the field of dentistry.

The most important cause of the gingival disease in the mouth of the tartar is a transparent and sticky layer called the bacterial dental plaque in the mouth. This layer can be away from the mouth by brushing two times a day . However, when effective cleaning is not performed, it is transformed into a hard, semi-permeable, rough, adhering substance on the tooth surface by the effect of saliva. This is called tartar or calculus. It is formed on the gingival and in the form of deposits between the teeth. There are many microbes in these deposits. This deposit is called a microbial dental plaque. If this plaque is not removed from the mouth, it becomes calcareous and turn into tartar that causes gingival diseases.

What should be considered after treatment

• After the procedure, the patient should not drink or eat for 2 hours.
• Hot and cold things should be avoided within the first 24 hours.
• After cleansing, it is possible to leak on gingival and may be cold or hot sensitivity for a few days.
• It can apply an ice bag from the outside to the gingival to prevent any light swelling.
• Painkiller can be used for mild pain in the early days.
• In order to accelerate the healing, might be gargled with warm water by adding salt in it.
• Dental cleaning is important after treatment. Although tooth cleaning is difficult for the patient immediately after treatment, the use of brushing and flossing should be continued. Antiseptic mouthwashes can also be used. Mild hemorrhages may occur in the first days.

• It is very important to pay attention to oral care in the success of treatment. If you do not care for oral care, the same problem may be more severe.
• After the cleaning of the joints located at the teeth bottom, the gaps between the teeth may become tangible.
• During the disease, the teeth can also continue to shake after cleaning due to the support tissues that the teeth lost.
